The Chicago Bears used their third-round-pick in the 2019 NFL draft to take RB David Montgomery out of Iowa State. Montgomery has drawn comparisons to a number of backs in the league, but nonetheless, he should perform well in Matt Nagy’s offense.
Former Bear RB Jordan Howard had a couple decent seasons for the Monsters of the Midway, but he didn’t fit well in the offense and is no longer on the team. Utility weapon Tarik Cohen has shown that he can be a major threat in the passing attack, but lacks the prototypical RB size that most coaches look for. As far as Mike Davis is concerned, I could see him making a small impact, and being there if needed, but I see the Bears trying to get Montgomery as much experience as they can.
I can see Montgomery stepping into a somewhat decent role at the beginning of the season. He’ll see some early-down work and as the season progresses, I can see he eventually becoming a three-down RB by the end of the year. He has shown some pass-catching ability, so I could see him being a major part of the Bears offense.
Montgomery carried the ball 515 times in his last two seasons at Iowa State, and he racked up 2,362 rushing yards to go with 24 TD’s. He also caught 58 passes for 453 yards. He’s not a stranger to being the workhorse, and it seems as if Chicago has gotten their stud.
Montgomery has a current ADP of 11.04 according to Fantasy Football Calculator. I think that’s a great spot to take him, but I don’t think he’ll be there that late in the draft. I think as time goes on, we’ll see his stock rise. In Dynasty leagues, which draft rookies every year, I could see him going top-three easily. He’ll bring a very good return in investment.
2019 Stat Prediction: 190/790/7 rushing and 20/140/1 receiving
